The Wisconsin Watercolor Society was founded in 1952 by a group of Wisconsin artists. It was the first Wisconsin art organization to be devoted exclusively to watercolor painting. Its purpose now as then has always been to demonstrate and exhibit meaningful development in the medium of watercolor and to serve as a catalyst for those genuinely interested in watercolor.

Steve Horvath

Artist Biography

After earning a degree in Advertising Design, Steve spent 20 years in the advertising/design business, first as an art director for Milwaukee advertising agencies, then as president /owner of his own design business. He has won numerous local, regional, and national awards for his design work, especially in the area of corporate identification.

Steve then joined the faculty of Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) in 1989, first teaching in the Communication Design area and more recently teaching in the Foundations Department. Steve’s classroom activities at MIAD brought many of his experiences, interests, and artistic disciplines to bear on the assignments he prepared for his students. He especially enjoyed helping his students discover their own voice in their work and guiding them through the process of maturing as young artists. Steve recently retired from teaching to pursue his art-making full time and to become engaged with the Milwaukee Art Museum as a docent.

He has been creating and exhibiting his paintings and drawings in watercolor, pastel, charcoal and oil in galleries throughout the region and has his work in many private and corporate collections here and abroad.

Steve served on the board of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society for many years in various capacities from Newsletter Editor to more recently as President. Steve continues to share his expertise in painting and drawing by conducting demonstrations/workshops in watercolor painting and pastel drawing for some of the area / regional art and cultural organizations.

Artist’s Statement

My work shows my interest in the natural environment through bucolic scenes of the countryside in the Midwest and the Southwest areas of the country. I work in watercolor, pastel, oil and charcoal drawings. I’ve completed a number of series of images using the mono printing technique and have also produced a number of dry points.

I have recently purchased an iPad for the purpose of developing drawings in digital format. This is still a work in progress. Very challenging and a lot of fun. I find working in a number of different mediums very engaging and stimulating.
