The Wisconsin Watercolor Society was founded in 1952 by a group of Wisconsin artists. It was the first Wisconsin art organization to be devoted exclusively to watercolor painting. Its purpose now as then has always been to demonstrate and exhibit meaningful development in the medium of watercolor and to serve as a catalyst for those genuinely interested in watercolor.

Artist Statement

I started painting with watercolors in 1988. Along my journey to becoming an artist, I discovered that transparent watercolor allows me to capture both subtle and vibrant colors through multiple washes applied to paper. The watercolor pigments are allowed to mix and mingle on the paper which creates a spontaneous dimension to my work. The granulating pigments when applied wet on wet create interesting textures. I strive for transparency and luminosity in my paintings and rarely use opaque pigments.

I have found that with my creative ideas, paints, water and brushes, I can things I have envisioned. While my subjects vary, I paint what interests me at the moment. Many of my new paintings are from my imagination or perhaps it was a scene I saw somewhere in my travels. I do like to paint scenes from Whitewater and have been fortunate to have received permission from Chap Achen to use his father’s photos for reference.

I find enjoyment in the challenge, the complexity, and getting it right. The excitement comes from watching the colors mingle and flow as the painting comes to life. Watercolor behaves just like nature … fresh, spontaneous, and elemental in its simplicity.

The learning process of painting with watercolors never ends. There are always subjects calling out to be painted and new methods to learn.

I have exhibited in national, state and local juried shows. My art is in international, regional, local, corporate and private collections. I am a member of the Whitewater Circle of Artists, Whitewater Arts Alliance, National Watercolor Society, American Watercolor Society and a signature member Wisconsin Watercolor Society.
